Windswept 2008 success!
From as far away as Brooklyn, NY and South Africa, sixty people gathered together July 20-26, 2008 in Liberty, Missouri on the lovely campus of William Jewell College to learn more about Creative Motion! Not all people were able to stay for the entire week, and one was unable to arrive until Wednesday. In numbers alone, in a year that is suffused with economic difficulty for many, Windswept was a success. Several said it was the "Best yet!" We welcomed 17 new people on Sunday night, and hosted a large student class as well! (17 students age 12-18)

WORKSHOP ASSISTANTS - HELP THE HARMONY FLOW!
2008 workshop supported the formation of several assistants to the director and treasurer to ensure that workshop ran smoothly. It is with great appreciation that the planning committee thanks and recognizes these individuals which included executive board officers: Karen Gossett - treasurer, Mary Ann Fritz - president, Phyllis Pasley - First Vice-President, and Dr. Jane Fritz - faculty liaison. Other helpers included - Robin Hall - hospitality; Chris McKinney - volunteer coordination; Leah Bagwell - assistant to the treasurer; Becky Shafer - auction chair, Tom Pasley - videographer and countless others who volunteered in other ways, helped in the auction room, and to prepare for treasurer checkout. Future plans include seeking a workbook editor and marketing liaison as well and compensating all assistants with a $50 reduction in workshop fees. Special thanks to the members of the planning committee for 2008 for a job well done!

FACULTY RECITAL - OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
In partnership with the William Jewell Community Music School, members of the local music community were invited to attend the Windswept Faculty Recital. As a token of our outreach, a special online prize registration for a free private lesson for Windswept 2009 was also held, and will continue through July, 2009. Notable performances included the Windswept premiere of the new composition by Dr. Mary Ann Fritz of "Wondrous Grace" and a special integrated arts experience featuring a guest clown/mime troupe. Special thanks to Dr. Jane Andrews for facilitating this year's recital and to all the performers: John Morrison, Eric Kesler, Phyllis Pasley, Mary Hannah Klontz, Dr. Harold McKinney, Dr. Jane Andrews, Dr. Mary Ann Fritz, and Dr. Robert C. Smith.

HONORING RACHEL SHERMAN and GAY ARNOLDI BROWN
2008 marked the passing of two veteran Creative Motion teachers near and dear to many a Creative Motion student. In February, 2008, Gay Arnoldi Brown passed away at the age of 85. Just as workshop was beginning, we learned that 101-year-old Rachel Sherman had also died. 2007 participants may fondly recall our tribute to Rachel's 100th year. Both women were honored and remembered throughout the week and a special song was dedicated to honor Gay during Windswept's faculty recital on Monday night. We are all grateful to the ways in which these two extraordinary women enriched the work of Creative Motion and they will be missed.

CONGRATULATIONS!
Mary-Hannah Klontz
completed the requirements for Level III Professional Certification in Creative Motion teaching and was recognized by Certification Chair, John Morrison. This finds the Alliance with three Level III Professional Certificate holders: Mary Hannah Klontz, Dr. Mary Ann Fritz, and Dr. Robert C. Smith. As a bonus, Mary Hannah also shared a special gift with all workshop participants of her latest composition-in-progress entitled "Lost" which we were able to explore within the evening choral class. Mary-Hannah - you inspire us all! We are so proud of all of you!

Several of those present were recognized during Friday night's festivities. Jennifer Isenhour was named the Katheryn Allen Taylor scholar for 2008. A new "Wave of the Future" award was presented to Brent Ballard, Dylan King, and Jennifer Erskin. The First-timer awards were presented to Hunter Borton and Hilary Borton and the Exceptional Spirit awards were presented to Marva Watkins, and Caleb Fritz. The Silver Spoon award was presented to Eric Kesler.

MAJOR MILESTONES

2008 found the group recognizing Eileen Auxier and John Morrison's 45 years of workshop attendance! We were fortunate to have Eileen with us for part of the workshop week, and celebrated her accomplishment on Wednesday. John Morrison's recognition for 45 years of consecutive workshop attendance was celebrated during the Friday night celebration.

EXPRESSIVE ARTS CLASSES
Windswept planners suggested an experiment for daily adult Expressive Arts classes in 2008. The student class enjoyed daily experiences in Expressive Arts in 2007, and the decision to extend that daily option to Expressive Arts for adults was explored. This daily class for adults was met with enthusiasm, but the length of time for engagement in the arts (only one-hour) seemed too short for some. We continue to look for ways of bringing a balance to the schedule while continuing to offer a variety of classes.

APPLIED CLASSES

Combined the adult and student applied classes grouped by interest area was a new innovation in Windswept 2007. "We decided to repeat this in 2008 since it worked so well," said Phyllis Pasley, director. "We moved the classes to the early part of the afternoon, which also seemed a good fit for the participant needs. This configuration allowed us time for master-class style coaching, without over-burdening the evening master class time slot." Participants selected the track of classes to attend at registration. In addition to the piano, voice and instrumental tracks. An additional track in in independent studies was offered for the first time which allowed for exploration of Creative Motion application into the areas of dance, creative writing, and Eastern Energy Arts.

STUDENT CLASSES
The student class offerings for 2008 split the afternoon session into two classes, with Student Fundamentals and Student Expressive Arts. A recognition ceremony followed the Friday Evening Student-Led Celebration, which was a great culminating sharing time guided by our student afternoon class instructors.

Saturday morning's schedule was a bit shorter featuring Bach Chorales and breakfast followed by a final closing ceremony.

FAMILIAR FAVORITES

AUCTION

The annual silent auction was a real success. Hidden trinkets went to the top bidders. The item that created the most interest was the auctioning off of the right to select next year's t-shirt color. Dr. Harold McKinney paid $500 for this honor, and then awarded the opportunity to John Morrison. Spring Green tie-dye was selected for 2009. Thanks to all the generous donors of both auction items and winning bids! More than $1,600 was raised to support Alliance efforts.

Friday night's ice-cream party featured a twist to the guessing games -- of the "Guess the Movie Titles" to much merriment. Memorable favorites included Jane Cadwallader-Howe's "Duck Soup," A bevy of beauties sporting "A Chorus Line," and Frank Heller's "Legally Blonde 2 ."
