HONORING RACHEL SHERMAN
2007 marked veteran Creative Motion teacher and participant Rachel Sherman's 100th year! With that major milestone in mind, workshoppers enjoyed some special events to honor her tremendous spirit and wonderful contributions to Creative Motion. Participants were able to do some reflective writing in response to some of Rachel's paintings. A video interview and story sharing time was a highlight of Wednesday night. Participants also created a book to be sent to Rachel in recognition of her many contributions to Creative Motion.

MAJOR MILESTONES

Frank A. Heller,III
Celebrating 25 years.
(Then and now!)

2007 found the group recognizing Frank Heller's 25 consecutive workshops and Marilyn Alcala's 40th year of workshop attendance. Each was honored during the Friday night celebration.

APPLIED CLASSES
Combined the adult and student applied classes grouped by interest area was a new innovation of Windswept 2007. "This configuration allowed us time for master-class style coaching, without over-burdening the evening master class time slot." said Phyllis Pasley, director. Participants selected the track of classes to attend at registration. In addition to the piano, voice and instrumental tracks, additional tracks in conducting and in movement were offered . An afternoon class in Music Education was also well attended. We also opened up the afternoon schedule for adults to allow more time for rest and reflection. Said Pasley, "People have been asking for that for years, and we think we've finally found a way to do it!"

STUDENT CLASSES
The student class offerings for 2007 split the afternoon session into two classes, with Student Fundamentals and Student Expressive Arts. A recognition ceremony followed the Friday Evening Student-Led Celebration, which was a great culminating sharing time guided by our student afternoon class instructors.

Saturday morning's schedule was a bit shorter featuring Bach Chorales and breakfast followed by a final closing ceremony.

FAMILIAR FAVORITES

AUCTION

The annual silent auction was a real success. Hidden trinkets went to the top bidders. A raffle of one of Rachel Sherman's paintings was also held.

Friday night's ice-cream party featured a reprise of the "Guess the Song Titles" to much merriment. Memorable favorites included "Paperback Rider," "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves," and "One Hand, One Heart."

Expressive Arts Classes enjoyed charcoal drawings and an exercise in corporate decision-making.
Participant artwork was featured at the
Windswept Closing Ceremony.
Workshopper India Garms enhanced her performance at a Master's Class when coach Dr. Harold McKinney helped bring her woodland scene to life using fellow workshoppers as trees and other elements of the forest.

A Windswept Baptism
- (for Alex and Asher)

Beloved children,
What do you see gazing up from your carriage?
A circle of faces cooing at you
You know us not – but you are ours.

Beloved children,
What do you hear, bouncing in your mother’s arms?
The harmony of instruments
The rhythm of dancing feet
The melody of your father’s piano
The beginning of your own song.

Beloved children,
This is your clan,
This once-a-year family reunion.
A diverse community drawn together

To find the music again
To feel the swing
To remember to breathe
To be reminded how to fly.

Beloved children
We promise to share your song
To dance with you
To encourage and support you
This gift of music we give to you is all we have.
But it is everything.

Beloved children – sing!

Karen Gossett - Windswept 2007

A special component of 2007 workshop was the mid-week arrival of the Dodson Family. Beth and Dan - student monitors in 2006 - brought their young sons, Asher and Alex.
The poem, by Karen Gossett -- at left was inspired by their visit.
