Windswept 2010

The 60th Annual Creative Motion Alliance Summer Conference was a great success! Director Jane Andrews and treasurer Leah Bagwell worked hard to ensure that workshop ran smoothly.
More than 50 made the trip to Liberty to take part in the 2010 conference. Highlights included the unveiling of the 2nd edition of Creative Motion by Allen and Niles in a special session on July 19th.Participants were able to meet the "founding mothers" Martha Stockton Russell, Margaret Allen, Anne Niles, Opal Gilpatrick and Florice Tanner. Several of those present were recognized during Friday night's festivities. Kyra Klontz, Eleanor Crowley and Caleb Fritz were named the Katheryn Allen Taylor scholars for 2010. The First-timer awards were presented to Joe Brown and Lydia Somers. The 2010 Exceptional Spirit awards were presented to Jodie Wingert, Angie Baroffio and Melody Burkhart The Silver Spoon award was presented to Dr. Mary Ann Fritz for her many contributions, but most especially for the editing of the 2nd edition of "Creative Motion" by Allen and NIles.

MAJOR MILESTONES
2010 found the group recognizing Mary Hannah Klontz 25 years of workshop attendance! Historian Lora Little presented her with a framed photo and crystal plaque.

EXPRESSIVE ARTS CLASSES
Both Adults and Students enjoyed daily classes in Expressive Arts during the 2010 conference. This daily class for adults was met with enthusiasm, and the length of time for engagement in the arts was extended to 1.25 hours. We continue to look for ways of bringing a balance to the schedule while continuing to offer a variety of classes.

APPLIED CLASSES

In 2010 we continued to combined the adult and student applied classes grouped by interest area, as we did in Windswept 2007, 2008 and 2009. Participants selected from among the tracks of piano, voice, instrumental tracks and independent studies, which allowed for exploration of Creative Motion application into the areas of dance, public speaking, financial management and interpersonal relationships.

STUDENT CLASSES
The student class offerings for 2010 featured an afternoon session called Student Fundamentals led by Phyllis Pasley and Christie Tompkins. Student Expressive Arts was a morning offering and was well-received by all students. A recognition ceremony followed the Friday Evening Student-Led Celebration, which was a great culminating sharing time guided by our student class instructors.

Saturday morning's schedule was streamlined to feature Bach Chorales and breakfast followed by a final closing ceremony led by Jennifer Isenhour.

FAMILIAR FAVORITES

AUCTION

The annual silent auction was a real success. Hidden trinkets went to the top bidders. Thanks to all the generous donors of both auction items and winning bids! More than $1,300 was raised to support Creative Motion Alliance initiatives. The hit of the auction was the right to select the t-shirt color for 2011. These rights from the winning bid from Dr. Harold McKinney were passed on to Dr. Mary Ann Fritz for the selection of the shirt color and the selection of the ink color was awarded to Max Johnson.

Friday
Friday night's dinner party featured a nod to the past with "Chinese Night." Long-time workshop participants tell us that "Chinese Night" was an annual occurence. Everyone enjoyed dressing up in costumes and enjoying the fabulous formal meal featuring rice, pasta, chop suey and sweet and sour chicken with egg rolls buffet in the Phelps dining hall. Dr. Robert C. Smith and three little maids from school performed the Gilbert and Sullivan favorite of the same name. (Marilyn Alcala, Mary Hannah Klontz, and Dr. Jane Andrews.) The student led celebration featured student artwork, solo violin performer, Lydia Somers and poems from Hilary Borton and Eleanor Crowley. Other notable elements included the performance of non-standard notation, vocal improvisation and the game Ninja! This celebration was followed by the annual awards ceremony, and an ice-cream party led by an elaborate Chinese dragon constructed by Jennifer Isenhour and performed by her student, Ale
4x Abuaita, along with Jennifer and her husband Justin Isenhour. At the ice cream party, Tom Pasley also used the ancient Chinese text known as the "I ching" to do some fun fortune telling.
