Viva La Musica!
Bringing Music to Life
with Creative Motion Workshop

Sponsored by Sigma Alpha Iota
Appalachian State University
March 24, 2007
was a one-day workshop experience led by
Mary Hannah Klontz and Dr. Robert C. Smith

Clinicians Mary-Hannah Klontz and Dr. Robert Smith were invited by Dr. Harold McKinney and the sisters of Sigma Alpha Iota to give an introductory workshop in Creative Motion at Appalachian State University on March 24, 2007.  During the morning session, the thirty-three participants were introduced to the elements of Creative Motion through a variety of hands on activities and demonstrations as the group sang and played the Praetorius canon, Viva La Musica.   There was a tangible improvement in the quality of the music performance as well as a greater enjoyment by the musicians when using Creative Motion.  Later the participants heard the clinicians and other participants perform using Creative Motion techniques while interacting with the music.  Mrs. Klontz played Mozart Horn Concerto Number One as accompanied by Dr. Smith.

Current or former Appalachian State University music students who performed solos included Brynne Pulver, soprano, Casey Oakes, clarinet, Torian Chisolm, Tenor Saxophone, Jacqueline Gray, viola, Chris McKinney, viola, Justin Isenhour, trombone, and Kristi Edwards, vocalist.  Local musician and physician, David Dauphine, also performed on the viola da gamba.  Mrs. Klontz and Dr. Smith coached the performers in a master class along with ASU alumni and fellow Creative Motion certified teachers, Eric Kesler and Justin Isenhour.  Dr. McKinney premiered an original expressive arts composition and collaborative performance including trombone, narration and dance at the end of the workshop.
Sigma Alpha Iota, under the leadership of Sophia Snellings and Crystal Klusman, were gracious hosts for the workshop which was exceedingly well organized and attended.
It was exciting to have several experienced Creative Motion practitioners who have attended Windswept Summer Music Workshop, including Samantha and Pat Newton, Rachyl Smith, Jennifer and Justin Isenhower, Eric Kesler and Chris McKinney.  Their expertise helped lead those encountering Creative Motion for the first time to have such a positive and enjoyable day.  Several of those first time participants had this to say:

" Fantastic....I enjoyed every minute of it!"

"Moving, emotional, fun and inspiring.  Thank you!"

"The workshop was very helpful and very creative.  It ties into Alexander Technique except that Creative Motion is a connection and a flow that just ties everything together."

"I really enjoyed the workshop and feel that these concepts will help me tremendously.  I learned how to be freer and more playful." "It was a great experience and I enjoyed being part of it."
