Martha Russell first uncovered the principles that she called Creative Motion after a lengthy personal study with a variety of teachers. She shared the knowledge of her discoveries with several students - who were also fellow teachers - inviting them to her home in LaJolla, California for several summer institutes held throughout the 1920's.
Margaret Allen was one of those lucky few who were able to live, work and study with Martha Russell at her seaside home. After Mrs. Russell died in 1951, Margaret Allen, began to sponsor a week-long workshop at her mountain-top estate near Berea, Kentucky. Through her efforts and the work of countless others, Creative Motion study has been passed from teacher to student through the years, and continues to this day. - "You have nothing but God and hope to get you up in the morning!"
- "Take your body with you"
- "The older you get, the more beautiful you become"
- "This chord is like perfume that floats from a rose"
- "There are two teachers we have: One is the music up there, the other is your body"
- "The only thing you'll do right the next time is what you've heard and liked"
- "Feel your feet pushing down and the earth pushing up"
- "Once you do it right, you can always do it right"
- "Music is like a cradle rocking. Always connect the melody line with your body.(Julliard doesn't teach this!)"
