Iowa Creative Motion Workshop
Dr. Raychl Smith
and
Dr. Harold McKinney, presenters
Jane Cadwallader-Howe and Susan McGuire, co-directors

Creative Motion begins with the premise that the clearest and most vital musical and artistic expression springs from an internal experience of music in the body. Creative Motion principles were developed by pianist Martha Stockton Russell after lengthy personal study and collaboration with a variety of musicians and pedagogues, including Emile Jaques-Dalcroze. These principles ground musical learning experientially, and are appropriate for use with students at every level. Creative Motion is dedicated to the efficient use of energy to unify body, mind and spirit in artistic expression. Musicians working with Creative Motion often experience heightened musical expressivity and vitality.

What is Creative Motion?
The essence of Creative Motion is that all motion begins internally and springs from the breath outward into external movement. This process creates an energy wave, which we follow with our physical bodies to create a beautiful and complete movement. The body is the first instrument. It must be tuned and prepared for making music or doing any kind of action in a meaningful way.
What will you gain?
Your session leaders will explain the concepts of light-weight body, spring, swing, note-value timing, and phrase. Using many forms of teaching, our presenters will help you get in touch with the energy within your body during this very interactive session. You will be able to discover for yourself the changes that can occur by using some or all of the Creative Motion techniques to enrich your own performance skills and those of your students.
Who should attend?
Creative Motion is for private studio teachers, artists, classroom music teachers, music students, dancers, conductors, educators, music therapists, or anyone who enjoys music. Creative Motion promotes a sense of wholeness through music and provides tools which can be applied to the complexities of music or the complexities of life.
