A NOTE FROM OUR PRESENTER:

Thank you for your interest in Creative Motion. When you attend this workshop it is suggested you wear comfortable clothing for movement and be prepared to work in bare feet. Participants may elect to stay seated if movement or floor work is not in their best interest. (Optional: bring a yoga mat or towel. ) Re-certification documentation for educators will be available for those who request a certificate of attendance. About Creative Motion: Creative Motion brings a conscious awareness to the mental, emotional and spiritual pathway that exists for movement and music. This energy pathway is always available, yet often not noticed or followed due to interference from mental distraction and physical tension. Creative Motion Body Tuning exercises and visualizations heighten the sensitivity to intention, breath, balance, spring, swing and traits of energy to provide tools for greater ease & expression in performance. Those who practice yoga or tai chi may find some similarities to Creative Motion. Creative Motion can be applied to many facets of music making: individual performance, group performance, rehearsal technique, music analysis and programming. Setting intention brings the mind and body into energetic alignment, bringing greater clarity, purpose and efficiency to rehearsal or performance. Springing the breath allows for not only greater physical breath control, but provides the foundation for executing beautifully shaped phrases. Swinging the meter engenders ensemble unity and musical flow. Balancing for note value timing will bring rhythmic integrity and graceful execution of each note value. Sensing the energy traits in a musical work allows for flexible interpretation and programming that creates an artistic whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. This short workshop will introduce participants to several of the concepts mentioned above in a relaxing and enjoyable atmosphere through hands-on and minds-on participation.

ABOUT CREATIVE MOTION:
Creative Motion is the study of the efficient use of physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional energy which occur naturally in the body. Creative Motion stirs up the moving force we call music, and teaches us to recognize it within the body and realize it through a performance, activity, or interpersonal relationship.

What if you could take the energy inside of you and translate that into your music? That’s what you will explore during this day-long and unforgettable session. Your session leaders will introduce you to the basic concepts of Creative Motion developed by Margaret Stockton Russell in the 1920’s. You will see and hear Dr. Robert Smith play music without and with the energy of Creative Motion. Mary-Hannah Klontz will introduce you to body class emphasizing many of the techniques used in Creative Motion.

Don’t forget to bring your singing voice! Everyone that plays piano also sings with the music. The concepts you learn can be applied to many parts of your life. We will watch as a volunteer becomes the student of our session leaders and actually applies Creative Motion principles. The afternoon will continue with body tuning and information sharing about the 4 traits of energy, wide/tall and harmonic beat/phrase. Dr. Smith will use pieces by Bach, Clementi, Chopin, Schumann and Beethoven to show how Creative Motion can be applied. To end the day on a high note, we will revisit “Viva La Musica” with different energy traits and sharing what everyone experienced during this full and energizing day.

Be sure to wear comfortable clothes for moving around and expressing yourself!

What is Creative Motion?
The essence of Creative Motion is that all motion begins internally and springs from the breath outward into external movement. This process creates an energy wave, which we follow with our physical bodies to create a beautiful and complete movement. The body is the first instrument. It must be tuned and prepared for making music or doing any kind of action in a meaningful way.
What will you gain?
Your session leaders will explain the concepts of light-weight body, spring, swing, note-value timing, and phrase. Using many forms of teaching, Mary-Hannah Klontz and Dr. Robert Smith will help you get in touch with the energy within your body during this very interactive session. You will be able to discover for yourself the changes that can occur by using some or all of the Creative Motion techniques to enrich your own performance skills and those of your students.
Who should attend?
Creative Motion is for private studio teachers, artists, classroom music teachers, music students, dancers, conductors, educators, music therapists, or anyone who enjoys music. Creative Motion promotes a sense of wholeness through music and provides tools which can be applied to the complexities of music or the complexities of life.
